Yes, its sung in English, and the translation is as pungent as the original, but the compelling reason for buying this set is for the Turandot. It is, hands down, Jane Eaglens finest recording. The soprano is in superb voice, absolutely secure, with high notes easy and blazing and tenderness available when needed. A great performance. ONeills Calaf is caught too late in his career to be totally heroic, but his dedication and involvement are never in doubt. Mary Plazass Liu has the requisite (amazingly beautiful) soft high notes, and shes deeply moving. Clive Baylay does what he can with Timur, the dullest bass role in opera. Nicolai Gedda offers a cameo as the ancient Emperor, singing in perfectly understandable English. David Parrys leadership is thrilling. And Chandoss engineers have given us a crystal-clear recording, even in the biggest, heaviest moments. Very exciting. --Robert Levine

Jane Eaglen has often been touted as the coming great dramatic soprano. However, her recorded work doesnt give people any such impression. Her Turandot on this set is underpowered, unsteady and unfeeling. Its just a cardboard protrayal without any real vocal or interpretative distinction. The other members of the cast perform adequately.

The Chandos Opera In English series are perfect introductions to opera for beginners. This Turandot features the great talents of Dennis ONeill as Calaf, Jane Eaglen as Turandot, Mary Plazas as Liu and as the Emperor is Nicolai Gedda. Sung in English, it does not sacrifice the dramatic content, nor the original melodic beauty of Puccinis Italian opera style. What a splendid intro to opera for novices. Among other operas in the English-sung series are Mozarts Don Giovanni, Wagners Ring Cycle, Puccinis Tosca and Bizets Carmen, all popular and mainstream operas that are performed in major opera companies in our current day.

Turandot was Puccinis final masterpiece, opening night was in Italy in 1926 directly after Puccinis death. It is said every noted celebrity and big wig was there, except for Mussolini who hated the operas mix of patriotism and emphasis on the triumph of love. Turandot is set in ancient Peking, China, in a time of legend. The Princess Turandot (Jane Eaglen) the virgin daughter of the Emperor, has been decreed by law to wed the man who answers three riddles. Every suitor has failed so far and executed. As the opera begins, the Prince of Persia is being executed. Calaf (Dennis ONeill)is the son of Timur, the Tartar King, who is nearly crushed in the milling crowd. He meets up with his father and with his slave girl Liu, who is in love with Calaf. Upon first sight of the cold and proud Turandot, he vows he will answer all three riddles and strikes the gong. The three Ministers Ping Pang and Pong provide comic relief and melodic trios as they try to reason with Calaf. Turandot appears and tells the story of her wronged ancestor, Princess Lo-u-Ling, who was killed (and possibly raped) by the armies of the Tartar enemy. She asks the three riddles and each time Calaf answers correctly. She begs her father to change the law but her father insists the law is sacred. Calaf does not want to have her by force so he makes a deal with Turandot. If she discovers his name by dawn the next day, she will not have to marry him. Liu is in love with Calaf and attempts to keep his name a secret, even under torture. She stabs herself. Calaf finally kisses Turandot and breaks the spell. She is now in love with him and decides to keep his identity as a Tartar enemy a secret, proclaiming his name is "Love" to the public. The finale is one of the most renowned in opera history. Jane Eaglen is the reason you should purchase this recording. She is first and foremost a Wagnerian soprano, in the tradition of Birgit Nilsson who also sang the role of Turandot. Turandot is an icy Empress, whose high tessitura and sustained high notes are not flexible, but pretty static, yet powerful, cutting through the orchestra. This kind of voice is the definition for Wagnerian vocals and it is perfect that Jane Eaglens mighty voice is suited for Turandot. She has also sang the role of Brunhilde in Wagners Ring operas.

I dont find this recording to be at all satisfactory. The orchestral playing is good enough and Puccinis colorful score gets a vivid, if not truly exceptional reading. Unfortunately, the singing leaves much to be desired. Jane Eaglens Turandot is underpowered and she sounds like the characters same old haughty self even when shes supposed to be won over by Calafs love. This is a very one-dimensional and uninteresting characterisation. Dennis ONeill is caught here past his prime. Some of the high notes (and high lying passages) are rather effortful and the tenor is not in very fresh voice. Mary Plazas gives a tender performance of Liu with some beautifully spin-out high notes. Hers is the best performance of the set. The other roles are adequately taken but its good of have Gedda as the Emperor.

the chandos company captures the full beauty and size of her voice ( as it did with her tosca and aida ) unlike any of her sony recordings ( why ? why ? why ? ). this will tide us over until decca FINALLY releases the live metropolitan performance with pavarotti, hong and levine it has been sitting on lo these many years.

dennis oneil, excellent in everything except the big act 3 aria
and their the competition is just too fierce. plazas is a good
liu and like oneil maybe lacking that last bit of polish that
makes a good singer a great one.

the scene change for act 2 has to be heard ( and felt ) to be believed ( i think my living room floor shuddered )

parry, the conductor, knows how to drive this piece forward and when to take his time and the chandos team captures the chorus and orchestra in extraordinary clarity and sparkle.
i have rarely heard an accoustic so spacious and full.

Shot on location, with Tunisia doubling convincingly as a turn-of-the-century Nagasaki, this Butterfly shines with fragile beauty. The house becomes a brilliantly used set, at once airy and full of the scent of flowers and at the same time a cage for the trapped woman. Archive footage of bygone Nagasaki is used skillfully to underline the distance between the 15-year-old bride and Pinkerton.

Purists may prefer a more traditionally robust, stage-bound Butterfly, but youd be hard-pressed to find a more visually heartbreaking interpretation. Chinese soprano Ying Huang doesnt rock the rafters with her vocal power hers is a tender, delicately observed performance. Tenor Richard Troxells self-seeking Pinkerton is well sung. Ive seen Butterfly at San Francisco, Lyric Opera of Chicago and at numerous other venues, so its an opera whose nuances I think I know pretty well. I cannot imagine any performance that Ive ever seen of any opera that didnt have something I wished had been done differently, but picking apart this presentation really is difficult. OK, the floating relatives were a little too Hollywood, but the close-ups, setting, costumes, acting and, yes, singing were truly sublime. I have several other performances on both CD and DVD, but in all fairness, none of them take you as deeply into the love affair between Butterfly & Pinkerton as this one does. Really, the only thing Ive seen lately that approaches the intimacy of such a performance is the Met broadcasts live in theatres. If you only buy one Butterfly DVD, make it this one. In fact, Id almost say if youve never been to an opera before, start here. Its really that good.

Huang and Troxells Madame Butterfly is an unusually successful film adapatation of Puccinis beloved opera. While the film was created with great sensitivity to the musical needs of the work, the attention to detail in every aspect of the actual filming is amazing. Everything is done so well, and comes together is such a way as to create an absolutely visually stunning film. I also recommend watching the interviews at the end--they are very informative without being dull. I truly believe, if you cannot make it to the opera house for a live experience of Madame Butterfly, watching this film is actually an acceptable alternative.

Big American buffoon plucks exotic Japanese butterfly from all she knows and abandons her only to return and steal her child. When I first watched this, years ago, I cried and cried. Now I am grown up. The tragedy is that this is still business as usual for imperialist america and capitalism (and britain, france, israel)- we want you/yours, we take you, we use you up, we abandon you and we blame your tragic end on you.

A thoughtful ensemble cast stars in this tender, introspective reading of La Bohme, and maestro David Parry ekes all of the emotionalism out of the operas sadder moments. One might ask for more rambunctious comedy in the light scenes, especially those featuring Musetta--although Marie McLaughlin certainly sings beautifully enough--but then again, we might not be able to understand the words as well if the cast were allowed to run free. As it stands, Dennis ONeill is an ardent Rodolfo missing only some sheer loveliness of sound, Cynthia Haymons Mimi is handsomely sung and quite moving, and Alan Opies Marcello is the good friend to Rodolfo. In short, a nice, believable La Bohme and complement to the best-known recorded version of Puccinis beloved masterpiece. --Robert Levine

Yes, many would balk at the idea of an opera in anything but the original language. Sometimes it works, especially in operetta, and Puccinis La Boheme is just that, not in the same league as Tosca or Turandot, but closer to La Rondine, somewhere in between.

It is a charming piece, full of heart-wrenching situations, and some comedy, all given melodious invention by a master. I have some of the classic recordings: de los Angeles and Bjoerling under Beecham, Tebaldi and Bergonzi under Serafin, and they are superb in their own ways. But there is something which adds to knowing what is being sung.

This recording, even for those like me who understand Italian, is a real joy. Parry is a sensitive conductor with a first-rate orchestra (Philharmonia Orchestra), and the singers are superb, a match for other more well-known interpreters. Especially moving are Cynthia Haymon (Mimi) and Dennis ONeill (Rodolfo). Alan Opie (Marcello) and Alistair Miles (Colline) are equally touching. Andrew Shore (Benoit) is a first-class comic singer/actor. Marie McLaughlin (Musetta) may disappoint somewhat in her Quando men vo soletto per la via (Act II waltz aria), but she is otherwise a superb performer.

This recording makes it easy to get into the thick of the drama, with great music, well-tempered, and with passionate singing, leaving the listener, at the end, with at least one tear. The original play by Murger and Barriere, La vie de boheme (1849), was meant to pull at the heart-strings, and this production does just that.

Greatness of La Bohme brought to the English-speaking world

La Bohme is already one of the greatest operas, and this beautifully done recording recently done by Chandos makes this opera accessible to those who dont speak Italian. The orchestration and singing are both terrific and the English libretto and commentary are included. Even if you are not normally a fan of opera, this recording could be an excellent introduction.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have it on VHS and was so thrilled when it was released on DVD. Ive watched it many a time and every time I do, I cry. It is a tearjerker, so have some tissues handy. This is money well spent. Lana Turner is superb in this movie.

I cant remember how young I was when I first saw this film. What I do remember is the feeling of (HOME) it gave me. I was just a kid then Im 50 now and it still gives me that same feeling everytime I watch it. The look that Clayton has on his face in that court room is "SOUL STIRRING" as he gazes into his mothers eyes. A true Ross Hunter classic. If you cant feel Lana Turners pain as she wonders aimlessly from place to place, city to city, town to town , this film is what happy endings is all about. Life can be wondeful if you just believe !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this movie was made before Ron Howard played the role of "Opie Taylor" on the Andy Griffith Show, regardless, he is ADORABLE in this movie. He plays the role very well as a little boy growing up without a mother as he tries to fix his father up with dates. It like an earlier version of Sleepless in Seattle. Its a good wholesome "family" movie to watch.

If you are reading this, you are probably already a fan of the Courtship of Eddies Father, either the movie or TV series or both. This is a great movie of the 60s: supper clubs, jazz clubs, dates when the men wore suits and the women dressed up and looked fabulous.
I particularly enjoyed the commentary track with Shirley Jones, Dina Merrill and Stella Stevens. From their reflection on the movie, the commentary is fairly recent and it makes for a wonderful flash back 40 years to the making of the Eddies Father.

This being one of my two favorite shows from this era (the other being Eight is Enough), I wish that the powers that be would release the TV series on DVD. I would purchase it immediately. No questions asked. What a wonderful, sweet series this was. I noticed that people were requesting that the distributors produce the Eight is Enough series on DVD in the Comments section when I tried to locate it as well, which gave me the idea to do that for this series here. This unique play presents the afterlife as a steam bath, in which dead souls continue to obsess about the same petty concerns that obsessed them in their lives, until they are cast into a dark void by God, the Puerto Rican attendant (Jos Prez). Steambath was controversial in its day for its obscene language (which was softened for this filmed version, originally presented on PBS), its satirical take on religion, and some brief nudity by bombshell Valerie Perrine. Today its still very entertaining, but mostly as a core sampling of the surprisingly uncensored male attitudes from the dawn of the 1970s. The intriguing and imaginative plot, the excellent acting, and the tragedy of this TV adaptation of Bruce Jay Friedmans play not being available for todays audiences have been repeated by several reviewers. They are, in my opinion, all correct in their views about this wonderful, thought-provoking "black" comedy.

I know that at least one reviewer lamented the fact that many reviewers seemed to talk more about the "nudity" than the merits of the play/movie. I have not found this to be so. And, of course, in the version shown in the United States, there is not really any frontal nudity. However, I was fortunate enough to see Ms. Perrine not only when she was performing in Las Vegas, but in the uncut version of "Steambath" that was shown in the UK and on Armed Forces Television throughout the European continent in 1973.

Quite some time ago, after months and months of searching, I finally found the censored American version of "Steambath" on VHS at kultur dot com. I could not find it at a site mentioned by another reviewer. Kultur now has this on DVD as of May 2007. I do not know whether it was in response to the requests here and elsewhere to re-release this fine film, but it is now available on sites such as this one, Amazon dot com, and for rental on netflix dot com.

If ANYONE knows where I can obtain the 1973 UNCUT version shown outside the US, would you please contact me (see my review on imdb dot com, or just write to ww1965 at gmail dot com)?

Maybe its just because Im a guy, but I think that the uncut version should be made available today because it adds to the impact of this insightful character study of the various personalities of the men (and one woman) who are "trapped" in the steam bath room. The uncut version is still very mild compared to what is available today, and it was all done very innocently. However, you knew that you were in for something unusual when Ms. Perrine suddenly appeared in what was apparently a mens shower/steam bath facility and dropped her towel! (You only see her from the waist up whenever she is turned toward you, of course. After all, this was 1973. Nevertheless, Ms. Perrine was facing the camera enough in the uncut version to make a lasting impression on this reviewer!)

A chance to see Bill Bixby in a real change-of-pace role, playing a recently deceased man who slowly comes to realize that his life, to which he is so anxious to return, was not all it had cracked up to be. Bixby is thoroughly believable in his performance, by changes funny, anxious, fearful, supportive, intense, and even ever-so-slightly sleazy. Hes the perfect choice to head this cast in a wildly offbeat story of a group of people who, having died, find themselves in a steambath on their way to their final destination, seeking questions from the Puerto Rican attendant - who just happens to be God.

This is a program that I saw on Public Television back in the early 70s.
When I found out this was on DVD I couldnt wait to see it again. I have to say I was a bit dissapointed to notice that some scenes were altered from the original broadcast. Call me a purist, but I love to see things the way they were originaly broadcast.

This program originally had nudity, in particular Valerie Perrines shower scene. In the original you can see her breasts, in this version you do not. There is a black bar that appeares on the bottom of the screen during the front shot of the shower scene, blocking out the nudity.(There is also another scene with her that is cut)

Now this is not that big a deal as far as the story goes, you can still enjoy the play, and it is a good one. I gave this 3 stars because of the censorship on the DVD version. What made this controversial as far as television was concerned at the time was the language and nudity.

It seems that nowadays just because its on DVD does not mean its complete.

I remember the first time I saw this, back in 1973. It was cutting edge content for that era and Valerie Perrines shower scene added to the controversy, but it was funny and entertaining. Now, if the PBS series that spun out from it would just be released, I would glady add that to my collection.

Bill Bixby proves to be a real talent in this truly funny play in which a steambath is a sort of waiting place between death and the afterlife, and God is a Puerto Rican towel boy. The only negative to this work is that it calls for some special effects that really are pretty limp technologically - but pretty fair for its day. Valerie Perrine is actually a pretty good actress in this one.

A pure and simple review. The two previous seasons of My Favorite Martian were done by a company that has not followed through to the end of the series before (i.e. The Lone Ranger color years, anyone?). Im glad this Australian company finished out the rest of My Favorite Martian and had extras, too. A fun show. Like I said, a pure and simple review.

More than anything, seeing this set finally become available is great news for those of us who bought the first two seasons of "My Favorite Martian" from Rhino several years back...and then waited, and waited, and waited for the third (and final) season that never came.

The first thing to know about this set is that it doesnt come from Rhino, but rather from an Australian company, Umbrella. When it became clear that Rhino was never going to release the final season, Jack Chertok Productions (producer and owner of the the show) worked with Umbrella to produce and release this set in Australia -- but in a format that could be re-imported into the US. As a result, we not only get all 32 episodes of the final season, but we get to see the extras that Rhino didnt see fit to include in the previous seasons.

For those who enjoyed this show (and probably already own the first two seasons), this set is well worth buying. Its a better quality set by far than what Rhino released (no syndication edits or jumpy video) and has some nice extras. And most importantly, its fun to watch -- theres an innocensce behind the humor in "My Favorite Martian" that is nice to see, and a pleasant change from the mean-spiritness of so many newer programs.

I have a strong affinity for Banner and the Hulk and I am looking forward to season 3. Hope it comes out real soon, like later this spring or early this summer. I have some experience with being on the road, looking for a place to work and a secure place to sleep. Its not easy and it isnt getting easier. Staying out of jail is much more difficult today than it was 30 years ago. Cops everywhere will shake you down and try to plug something on you if youre alone on the road.

Walking alone is becoming more dangerous all the time, at least in the suburbs and the country. I suppose thats one of the reasons why I like series like the Incredible Hulk and the Fugitive (David Jansen) because I experienced some of that kind of freedom for a short time in the 80s and I know that it is fading away. Of course, being a fugitive on the run from nosey reporters and the law can be a problem, but at the same time, being on the open road going across the country without a true, secure destination is also the epitome of American freedom.

Believe it or not, I have some envy for Banner, despite his problem with the Hulk. I envy him because, while he is compelled by his situation to run from the NR reporter Jack McGee, he is also a very capable professional man with some very helpful skills, the kind that not only make friends but also impress the ladies. Thats more than I had when i was out there in the 80s. If it wasnt the Hulk getting him out of a dangerous situation, it was his professional skills.

Season two had somewhat of a slow start, imo, after the very romantic episode, Married, in Hawaii with Caroline (Mariette Hartley). The episodes following were okay, but I didnt really care for the main themes all that much. They were basically just situations where Banner took some low-profile jobs and got messed up with the local dunderheads. If I found myself in such situations Id just get the hell out of town asap, but thats me. Banner, ot-oh, had to play the good samaritin and get in over his head.

A Child in Need and Alice in Disco Land were okay, but obviously more human interest social statements than anything else, with the Hulk simply filling in the action scenes. Obviously, both wife and child-battering husbands and teenage alcoholism were becoming much more open for discussion at that time. Unfortunately, it was about 5 years too late for my family. Of course, the federally-mandated Christian-right solution was to blame it all on marijuana -- go figure!

The season got much more interesting after Stop the Press, an episode in which he ran into trouble while working as a dishwasher in a Chicago restaurant, with a dirty reporter working for the National Register, whose desk was just an elbow away from Jack McGee. Imo, this was one of the best episodes of the season, and the season on the whole improved quite a lot after it. Escape from Los Santos was okay, especially the scene where he broke out of the local jail after the crooked cops nailed him to implicate him for murder. Its always nice to see the Hulk get him out of the really tight situations. I enjoyed A Solitary Place, probably more than most, because I tried to live like that once and it brought back some memories.

Other episodes of this season that I enjoyed were The Haunted, about a schizoid girl that employs Banner to help her make a move back to her late folks country estate, treading upon deep, dangerous roots from her forgotten past Mystery Man, a 2-part episode that begins with an accident that causes Banner to lose his memory and with a bandage over his burnt face, unknowingly joins Jack McGee in a cross-country venture to regain it No Escape, about another schizoid man suffering from hallucinations, who leaks to Banner his desire to kill his wife and his doctor The Quiet Room, about Banner working as an orderly in a psyhiatric institution when he gets too close to a doctors secret mind-control experiments The Confession, about a nerdy computer technician who witnesses Banners Hulk eruption and takes the story directly to the National Register, while claiming he is the Hulk, looking for attention and seeking fame and Vendetta Road, about an angry young man and his girlfriend seeking revenge upon a huge oil monopoly that has been buying up all the local gas-stations and forcing others out of business.

Of the 22 episodes, I liked 14. The other 8 were okay, but not the kind I like to revisit in reruns. This package also includes another excellent episode from season 3, Homecoming, where Banner returns to his hometown to visit his sister and father for Thanksgiving (and saves their farm).

Anyways, Im a big fan of the Incredible Hulk series and I look forward to the other seasons on Dvd asap. Great series!

This set has been re-issued. And included one ticket for the upcoming Incredible Hulk Movie. An $8.50 value. The ticket has expired 7-31-2008. And you missed it. I picked this up at Target for $19.99 plus tax. It doesnt matter if theres the yellow sticker that says FREE MOVIE TICKET TO SEE THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Because you missed it. The ticket is by far not the only reason to buy the set. In fact the series is better than the movie. This is one great tv show with outstanding episodes such as "Married" "Ricky" "A Child In Need" and "Mystery Man" Parts 1 and 2. These are just some of my favorites. A total of 22 episodes on five single sided discs. Thats single sided. Includes three bonus features. Commentary by Ken Johnson on Married" An introduction by Kenneth Johnson which is a seven minute retrospective of the series. And a season 3 episode. "Homecoming". The last bonus is not much of a bonus. Universal did the same thing with Knight Rider Season 3, which included a Season 4 episode. They seem to lack imagination when it comes to special features. With The Incredible Hulk Seasons 3 and 4 only days away, well have a lot to Hulk out with.

This EP "tested the waters," so to speak, for New Miserable Experience, and while its both short, and contains a few songs contained on that album, its exclusive tracks are excellent. Despite being formally OOP, apparently, it can be found everywhere, and is well worth the $5 thats usually charged.

The Gin Blossoms first album, New Miserable Experience, is destined to become a minor classic being as it is the almost perfect distillation of jangle, swagger and angst in a catholic style. The plaintive angellic rasp of heartbroken vocals laid over chiming raunch, evokes all the greats but with a distinctive edge of youthful desperation, despair, anger and excitement. That one of the principals then killed himself comes as little or no surprise as there is a definite sound of someone losing the will to continue in this world of broken hearts and desolation. Despite this the album is uplifting, with soaring harmonies, guitars that crunch and fizz, and even a touch of humour as the band show off their country licks and ways with a cynical lyric "....you cant call it cheating cos she looks a lot like you". Get the album as the e.p. only gives you half the story and the extra tracks arnt really that great.

Sometimes raw and rough just means poor production or lousy musicianship. Not in this case. This early Gin Blossom disc is certainly less polished then New Miserable Experience (which contains 4 "Dusted" tracks) but it is raw and rough in a good way. To me, this cd has a much more country feel to it. Alt/Country that is. The guitars remind me alot of early Old 97s. One track, "I cant sleep" sounds like it could have belonged on the Long Ryders first record. I think if the band had gone in this direction rather than the sound of "Congradulations, Im Sorry" then they would have been right in the Alt/Country discussion. If you like the Gin Blossoms and you are a fan of Alt/Country then pick it up. You will not be disappointed.

I think this makes an excellent complement to the rest of the Blossoms work. If you love their 2 discs, consider this a supplement, sort of like rounding things out in a box set. Some gems here, some forgettable, but a great look at the bands beginning.

After getting reacquainted with "New Miserable Experience" over the past couple months, it piqued my interest about "Dusted" and I finally bought a copy. I really had some pre-conceived notions about what "Dusted" would sound like. I thought it would show the band as a "work in progress", somewhat unpolished, a band finding its way. Man was I wrong. Great rock songs, keeping it simple, much more immediate and live sounding than "New Miserable Experience". The line-up of songs here might actually be better than "New Miserable Experience". (Hard to see pop-rock being done any better than on the tracks "Girls Cant Wait" and "Angels Tonight". Both are superb). Two things that really stand out between the two discs are the vocals and guitar parts. The vocals have a much rawer sound on "Dusted", and the guitar work on "Dusted" is much more "front and center". If this was Doug playing these bits, he was a guitar god! (The song "Keli Richards" kicks!!!)

Speaking of Doug Hopkins, I never had any background on him, never thought about it. But for whatever reason Ive become somewhat infatuated. Ive read "Jesus of suburbia: A holiday tale, of sorts," a couple of times now. (The story was written by Brian Smith for the Detroit Metro Times in December 2007). Ive also am constantly listening to the "Chimeras" songs on the Doug Hopkins "MySpace" page, and usually find myself on the "Lost Horizons" tribute page to Doug Hopkins. How could the life of a guy who wrote such great songs have turned out so tragic? It would be great that if, over time, people gradually catch on to how great Dougs music was. I finally have.

Popularizing The Word "Fools"...Again

The word "fools" turns up in many of The Gin Blossoms songs, namely "Until I Hear It From You", Until I Fall Away", and "I Cant Figure You Out".

Dusted offers some raw and unfinished versions of "Lost Horizons", "Hey, Jealousy" and the smash "Found Out About You". Other greats include "Girls Cant Wait" and "Kelly Richards".

A must have for the true Gin Blossoms fan!

The Gin Blossoms are often unfairly lumped in with the faceless crowd of 90s post-grunge bands, but this release, in particular, proves that there was something a bit more intriguing at work within these Arizonans minds. Before they were pinning infectious, wondrously sung (Robin Wilson truly had one of the most distinctive vibratos of the 90s) pop gems, they were a blue-collar garage band vaguely resembling a slightly poppier installment of The Replacments, or perhaps a rough-and-tumble Byrds. Several later Blossoms classics ("Hey Jealousy," "Lost Horizons," "Found Out About You," etc.) are found here in there earliest, most primitive forms--if you listen to the versions here and then listen to their reworkings on "New Miserable Experience" you will be astonished at how slow the later versions sound. Philip Rhodes drums at a frentic pace, while Doug Hopkins (rest in peace) and Jesse Valenzuela pour on jiterry, jangly guitar lines beneath Robin Wilsons rough drinking voice (he sounds like an entirely different singer on this record). On a parting note, I must say that the fourth track, "Girls Cant Wait," is one of the absolute finest Gin Blossoms records, an astonishing, heartfelt tune that will leave immediate impressions.

I was perusing the cd racks last weekend at my local public library when I stumbled upon "Outside Looking In: The Best of The Gin Blossoms". The Gin Blossoms immediately conjured up fond memories of my post high school/early college years. I was in on the band long before "Hey Jealousy" became a huge smash for the band. So nostalgic for the past, I checked out the cd. I almost forgot just how catchy the bands music was. They were candy for my ears. The band really had a knack for cracking out one catchy pop/rock song after another. Sure the band had a few misses too. I never liked "Mrs. Rita". That has always been my least favorite Gin Blossom song because it is so devoid of a good pop hook. I was so pleased that the band included my personal favorite songs "Cajun Song" and "Until I Fall Away" (which I always liked more than the overplayed "Hey Jealousy"). Im glad I picked up "Outside Looking In". It brought back memories of life that was simpler (and devoid of bills and rent).

It looks like others agree that this music brings back major memories for the 20-somethin crowd around here... No joke, if you grew up in the 90s you are going to feel seriously depressed (in a good way though! haha)... Modern music just cant touch this. These guys along with greenday, pearl jam and the offspring were the reason the 90s kicked .

Highly recommended album... although just beware that it will make you feel kinda sad about the direction music and popculture has gone these days...

I bought Major Lodge Victory the same week as I got a new car and it was great timing. This is the perfect cruising CD for a sunny day, or any day that you want to make seem sunny.

New Miserable Experience is one of my Top 10 Favorite Albums of All Time, so thats my reference point. MLV has a teeny bit of polished pop which could have become bad saccharine but didnt. This is not a bad album, but it certainly isnt as good as "New Miserable Experience" or "Congratulations...Im Sorry." At times I felt like I was listening to Tom Petty rather than The Gin Blossoms. Dont get me wrong, I like Tom Petty, but not when Im expecting the Gin Blossoms.

The main difference here to me is that this album has a lot of good songs, but no great songs. Their earlier albums had several great songs.

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with this album. By itself it is a decent (albeit dated sounding) pop/alternative album.

However as a fan of the Gin Blossoms work back in the 90s I cant help but feel that something is missing in this album. As I listen to it, something just isnt the same as the old stuff. The Gins have never boasted complex lyrics or powerful sound, what made them so addictive for me was that bittersweet mix of upbeat tempo with haunted lyrics. The tempo is still nostalgic Gins, but the lyrics have evolved (or rather devolved) into something more mainstream sounding. Some of this is obviously going to be the loss of Doug Hopkins heartfelt and creative influence that were able to reach out to the audience with simple rhymes and yet grab their emotions. Who couldnt find something in those old songs to relate with? Granted, Dougs influence didnt fuel every song that the band delivered, but the same problem exists. The lyrics and rhymes feel sanitized now and dont capture me the way the old lyrics do. There are still some real gems on this album...but compared to their old albums this is more of a reunion treat, though it still delivers on that patented Gin Blossoms sound.

One of the most oft-told myths of the 90s alternative music scene is that Gin Blossoms were a lesser band without the songwriting of Doug Hopkins, who wrote their big hits Hey Jealousy and Found Out About You. Now I happen to agree that the latter song is one of the great songs of the 90s and its in my personal all-time favorites list and nothing theyve done since has equaled it, but its still just one song......and a re-listen of Congratulations Im Sorry and Major Lodge Victory should prove beyond a doubt that the Hopkins myth is mis-guided. He was a gifted songwriter to be sure, but Robin Wilson, Bill Leen, and Jesse Valenzuela (the principal writers since) have crafted two, very deep, albums since then, full of good songs.

And thats whats great about Congrats and Lodge: Theyre chock full of great songs, and noticeably lacking any bad ones, or even ones that smack of being "filler" material. The songs take advantage of Wilsons clear voice, with Valenzuela backing him, and the terrific guitar playing of Valenzuela and Scott Johnson. Its just a pleasure to be able to listen to a guy who can actually sing (and not wail), where I can understand pretty much every piece of lyric coming at me, and Robin Wilson delivers that.

My only real complaint is that Major Lodge Victory took 10 years to come out. I hope their next album will see the light of day a lot sooner than that, Im looking forward to it.

The first times I listened to this cd I just thought it was unnecessary the reunion of these great musicians.

It had to pass some time, then, when I was more relaxed I could find again that blue rocked sound with brilliant notes that made me love the Gin Blossoms.

Of course my best favorite is still the NME, but defitely I feel good enough this later album. I recommend it!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abels leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccinis lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurischs fine Sharpless, the singers dont please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isnt in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

I did not think I would enjoy or play this Butterfly as much as I have. Somehow operas sung in English, even those originally composed in English, seem a little bit silly compared to those sung in Italian, French, and German and even Czech and Russian. Butterfly, however, transfers well to English. Just two years after its 1904 premier, the libretto was translated into English and performed with much success, particularly in the United States. After several years, however, the use of an English libretto stopped and this Butterfly is the only commercial recording currently available.

Any performance of Butterfly, unlike Turandot, is critically dependent on the excellence of its title character, and Australian soprano Cheryl Barker is up to the task. She has improved her technique over the years, and, with little doubt, is underrated by those who have failed to adjust opinions fixed some time ago. The Amazon editorial review by Robert Levine is quite correct in saying that Barker sounds under strain in this recording but quite incorrect in saying that she never sounds pretty. In fact, she mostly sings very well and sounds very pretty indeed. However, there are some moments, particularly when Butterfly herself is under strain, in which Barkers voice becomes harsh. The most critical of these times is in the final aria, just before Butterflys suicide. Barker can and has sung this aria superbly unfortunately, she does not do it here.

The final aria is the dramatic peak of Madama Butterfly, and I suspect that Barkers lapse in it may have colored Mr. Levines opinion of the whole recording. Overall, however, Barkers performance is very moving and more than good enough to give English speaking lovers of Madama Butterfly an understanding of the opera that otherwise might be lost in translation.

A touching English Butterfly

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barkers Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasnt a large italianate soprano the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.
She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkertons arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kales Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.
Abels conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.
This wont replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

Swinging bachelor Johnny Gains (Bixby) one day learns that he fathered a boy 17 years ago when the bright eyed lad shows up at his doorstep. The mother has passed on and Johnny has some tough decisions to make and learns in the process that he has some growing up to do himself.

Lighthearted TV movie of the week goes by all too fast (clocking in at 73 minutes) and only superficially touches on an important subject. Bill Bixby is very likable (as always) and despite all the short cuts the film is quite enjoyable. Just dont expect too much.

One thing though. The DVD is not very good with heavy grain throughout and not even chapter stops. Its acceptable...just.

The more I listened to New Miserable Experience the more I was convinced that it was one of the greatest records ever made, at least one of the greatest debuts ever (I know it wasnt actually their first, but officially it was). Anyway, I was prepared to be disappointed by "Congratulations, Im Sorry." I was, but not so much. At first, I only liked one or two songs. But over the years the c.d. grew on me. It lacks the intensity and the pain that Doug Hopkins displayed on NME but it still has most of the elements of the first one. Its got the same sound, just not as "driving and biting" as the first.My favorites are "Follow You Down," which got a lot of airplay, "Not Only Numb," and "As Long As It Matters." IMO, "As Long As It Matters" is the best song on the c.d. and sounds most like something off of NME. Unfortunately, Ive seen the Gin Blossoms (4) times and theyve never played this song in concert. Anyway, the one disappointment is that " Til I Hear It From You" is not on here, and but was released about the same time for a movie soundtrack. If you liked the first one you will like this one as well.

This album actually surpasses "New Miserable Experience" in terms of cohesiveness and production. Every track is a winner!

I had a friend who for a whole year of High School was trying to "Unload" this album on me, which I constantly refused. He wanted to give it away, but I figured it must be realy bad if its free. Man, was I wrong.

Right from the beginning the upbeat, yet introspective "Day Job" and "Highwire" get your toes tapping. Of course the album has its radio hit "Follow You Down", but even "Memphis Time" which moves into classic country music territory is enjoyable.

A great album and worth more than the mere penny people are asking, which is 1 cent more than I had to pay for it. Lucky me.

Im probably what youd call a casual fan of Gin Blossoms. I have their two major-label 90s releases ("Congratulations..." and "New Miserable...") but didnt know they had lost one of their founding members BEFORE Congratulations was released. I dont see major differences in the "GB sound" or quality at_all b/w these two discs. Both are favorites in my listening rotation.

These guys have a lively, engaging, upbeat sound. Fans of early-to-mid R.E.M. and other "jangly alt rock" have an incomplete music collection if they dont have GBs stuff. Id talk about individual tracks, but it wouldnt matter as every track on this album grabs you both lyrically and musically. Its just THAT good.

In case youre interested in more GB, they are now reunited and touring (Summer 06) with a NEW ALBUM called "Major Lodge Victory" slated for release 8/8/06.

The Gin Blossoms released their second album, Congratulations...Im Sorry, in 1996. This was made during a troubling time for the band as they not only had to follow up their very successful debut, New Miserable Experience, but they also had to do this without one of their chief songwriters, guitarist Doug Hopkins, who was dismissed from the band and would later commit suicide. Their first single, the catchy "Follow You Down", along with the non-album track, "Until I Hear It from You", showed promise as it became a double-sided Top 10 hit. Unfortunately, the album is a bit of a disappointment as it plays like a collection of decent to very good songs that dont grab your attention, even after repeated listenings.

The album starts out strong as "Day Job" is a great rocker while "Highwire" and the aforementioned "Follow You Down" are both very good. After this, the album is solid but not spectacular with the best tracks being "Virginia", "I Cant Figure You Out", and the pretty ballad "As Long As It Matters." Other tracks like "My Car", "Perfectly Still", "Competition Smile", and "Not Only Numb" are decent but dont contain the hooks or the passion that made New Miserable Experience so great. All told, while theres nothing bad on Congratulations...Im Sorry, only the first three songs are on the level of their debut. The bands latest release, Major Lodge Victory, is a return to form as the catchy melodies from their heyday return.

Im converting all my CDs to computer and selling off the CDs. Somebody just bought this one and I listened to it while ripping and, though its only a decade old, the guitars, harmonies and tired, as in physically, yearning vocals make the GBs sound like something out of the early sixties. I actually liked it better on this hearing than the last time I played it -- and thats been years. Highlights: Day Job, My Car, I Cant Figure You Out, and Competition Smile.
